Thank you for this, Jules. A fascinating lens in which to see the book. In my talks on the book I see it as a journey into wholeness and integration. A blending of masculine and feminine energies. There are so many important female figures: Ino, Nausicaa, Circe, Calypso, Scylla, Charybdis, Queen Arete, the Sirens, Athena, and, of course, Penelope. Showing there is lots of nuance and growth to integrating the feminine in all of us.
Great, thought-provoking read on the Preston to London train. Interesting about the datura- and the apparent antidote galanthis nivalis or snowdrop. I hear a lot about datura in southern California and northern Mexico. I think of it as Californian ayahuasca although even the most hardened druggies are wary or trying it. As you know, it’s native to some of the tribes there. I like the fact that nobody’s really on to it yet. It seems that snowdrops were brought to the Americas by Europeans. I guess if you know how to do datura properly you don’t need an antidote.
"Hardened druggies" might be smarter than you think! The word about Datura amongst trippers back in the day was don`t bother unless you want to have a horror story to tell, assuming you survived that is.
Everything I have heard about Salvia makes me not want to ever try it!! I had a small amount of Datura mixed with Ayahuascha once, but apparently it wasn’t the challenging type…
I use the term “hardened druggies” with respect, in this context. I lived in a SoCal California community for a while and met some incredible people with many different experiences. One young woman’s grandfather had Tongva heritage and she said he knew about the medicine. She wished she’d asked him more about it! Personally, I’m happy to leave it to what the petroglyphs say.

For years I was entranced by Ciceros famous quotation about the Eleusinian Mysteries: "through these mysteries we have become gentler, gone from a barbarous and rustic life, to a civilized one, that we not only life more joyfully but also die with better hope." Now that seems like bullshit to me. We were far more gentle and less barbaric 1500 years before they were institutionalized by the Greeks at Eleusis. that;s when they became an opium of the masses and found pride fighting endless wars. The lotus, the blue lotus, symbolizes the generations of psychedelic dreamers, the MKULTRA victims... not a bad way to spend a decade. certainly better than fighting....
i think it is a mistake to think of homo sapien as one homogeneous species. not all of us are seeking empire. the minoans didn't. check out this brilliant book.... https://beforewar.com/
