A month ago, when author Sam Harris devoted an episode of his podcast to TREAT California, his wife, author Annaka Harris, tweeted excitedly, ‘this is the most important initiative for humanity in my lifetime’.

TREAT was a ballot initiative to create a $5 billion public-private agency in California, to research, promote and provide psychedelic therapies to all Californians. It launched a year ago and for a while it looked like it could succeed, and create the biggest player in the global psychedelic market.

And then, suddenly, it went kaput - the second psychedelic ballot initiative to fail in California in a month. What happened?
